Kharkiv – Leader of Preparation for Euro 2012
Less than 500 days are left till the start of the European Football Championship 2012. The managers, responsible for preparing for Euro 2012, reported on the work done in 2010. Kharkiv city head Gennady Kernes assured that all tasks from the program of preparing for Euro 2012 are being performed: “The main thing now is to prepare Metallist Stadium by June and to pass it to the operational League management, and to build a press center. Kharkiv is also ready to provide another training camp (the field next to the hotel “Superior” under construction). We can keep it as an additional fallback.” Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration Mikhail Dobkin gave an excellent evaluation to the work on preparation for Euro 2012: “If we talk globally, then we have done everything we planned. We have a regional, city and state program, and according to this program we are moving ahead of schedule. Adjustments were made to the program but only in the direction of increasing scope of work. That is, we do not reduce anything, only add.” First vice-president of Ukraine Football Federation Sergey Storozhenko also gave “the highest score to everything done and being done. If we talk about the airport, 75% are done. I am sure that by June-July we will be delighted with what we will have done. The stadium is already finished, but we listen to every wish of our colleagues from the UEFA. As for the training camp, the representatives of the Spanish national team visited the Metallist camp in the Vysokiy township and remained not just delighted, but they also are ready to sign an agreement to make this base their residence during Euro 2012. The second base in Solnechnyi township is also being constructed actively. Particularly reconstruction of the ring road should be noted too. And when the winter is over, the active phase of reconstruction of Kyiv-Kharkiv-Dovzhanskyi highway toward Donetsk will start. Kharkiv is a leader in preparing for Euro 2012. Everyone states it: Deputy Prime-Minister Boris Kolesnikov, the Cabinet on the whole and the League auditors. Other cities are also developing actively, but Kharkiv is leading. We will be checked monthly in 2011. And the closer Euro 2012, the more we will be visited – not only to check, but also to help and suggest.”

Ukraine Leader Pushes Triangular Partnership
BRUSSELS — In a strong defense of his rapprochement with Moscow, Ukraine’s president, Viktor F. Yanukovich, said Monday that his policy had bolstered Europe’s security, improved all-round cooperation with Russia and consigned to history the recent disruption of gas supplies to Europe. President Viktor Yanukovich of Ukraine, center, was welcomed by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, right, and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy in Brussels. After his first meeting with the European Union, Mr. Yanukovich contrasted past disputes with Russia with the way in which he said Ukraine is now working — “in the spirit of partnership in the triangle of Russia-Europe-Ukraine.” Mr. Yanukovich’s visit to Brussels came nine months after he came to power and began a hasty reconciliation with Moscow, striking a deal over gas transit and extending the lease of Russia’s Black Sea naval base. At the time, there were worries that the change of Ukrainian leadership would drag the country away from the European Union, and since the election the bloc has expressed worries about worsening human rights in Ukraine. But at the meeting Monday in Brussels, the European Union sought to encourage reform in Ukraine, saying it hoped to complete by mid-2011 talks on a free trade deal and other ties with the country. It also offered an plan toward visa liberalization — a move that would let Ukrainians travel more freely within the E.U. and would be a significant prize for the government in Kiev — though no clear timetable on requirements might be relaxed. Ukraine, which has been independent since the collapse of the Soviet Union almost two decades ago, borders four E.U. countries and is a vital energy corridor. Finally, asked how long it would take for Ukraine to become a member of the E.U., Mr. Yanukovich said Ukraine was still unclear how long the road to membership would be. “The main thing is to proceed along that road,” he said.

Interesting facts about Kharkiv
Mirror Stream Fountain. The Mirror Stream fountain was built in 1947, to commemorate victory in the Second World War. It is located at Sumska Street, just opposite the Opera Theater. It is situated in a small but very picturesque garden good for taking a stroll or just sitting for a while on a bench, or arranging a date. Shevchenko Monument Today we can hardly imagine Kharkov without the Shevchenko monument. This monument is inseparable from the surrounding park area named after Taras Shevchenko and the city's architectural integrity. There is a strong concordance between multilevel shapes of the monument and bold ledges of the magnificent edifices of the Derzhprom building and Kharkov State University. The monument faces the main city thoroughfare - the Sumskaya street. From his elevated position Kobzar is looking at the city and its dwellers, and it seems like he is alive again and is entering our life. Below him life is in full swing: the brass band gives a performance, the war veterans, students come to the park, guided tours are led by, young people appoint meetings, children - those who will have to look after the city in the next millennium - play near the monument in the park...

24 August! 19 years old!!! Independence Day of Ukraine
After facing two World Wars and later lots of political turmoil, Ukraine got their independence from the Soviet Unions on the 24th of August, 1991. The Independence Day of Ukraine was a hard fought battle with the constitution being adopted nearly five years after its independence. Hundreds of thousand Ukrainians organized a human chain for Ukrainian independence in memory of the 1919 unification of Ukrainian People's Republic and West Ukrainian National Republic on January 1990. The conservative Communist leaders of Soviet Union even attempted a coup to remove Gorbachev and to restore Communist party power in August 1991 but failed. In response to this the Ukrainian parliament adopted the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine in which the parliament declared Ukraine as an independent democratic state on 22nd August 1991.

According to international food regulations, "honey stipulates a pure product that does not allow for the addition of any other substance...this includes, but is not limited to, water or other sweeteners".[19] Honey barbecue and honey mustard are common and popular sauce flavors. Honey is the main ingredient in the alcoholic beverage mead, which is also known as "honey wine" or "honey beer". Historically, the ferment for mead was honey's naturally occurring yeast. Honey is also used as an adjunct in beer. Honey's remaining carbohydrates include maltose, sucrose, and other complex carbohydrates. As with all nutritive sweeteners, honey is mostly sugars and contains only trace amounts of vitamins or minerals. Honey also contains tiny amounts of several compounds thought to function as antioxidants, including chrysin, pinobanksin, vitamin C, catalase, and pinocembrin. The specific composition of any batch of honey depends on the flowers available to the bees that produced the honey.

Are we ready for Euro 2012?
It is really difficult to find a person who doesn’t like such world-renowned and loved game as football. And the city of Kharkov is not an exception too. As it was announced on May 13, executive committee of the UEFA decided that such Ukrainian cities as Kiev, Donetsk, Lviv and Kharkov will continue their preparation for the EURO-2012 and are obliged to confirm their readiness of holding a European Football Championship of 2012 on November 30. Kharkov always was a city full of events, students and busy social life. But now it turned into some incredible bee hive. In different parts of the city you will notice wide scope of construction works the scale of which is pretty unusual for the locals. Many of the roads are completely renovated and broadened. Tramway lines were removed from Pushkinskaya Street, which is one of the main central streets of Kharkov, in order to avoid traffic jams and to make driving easier to the soccer stadiums and other venues created for Euro 2012. But Kharkov preparation for the EURO-2012 is not limited by the roads renewal. It also involves renovation of the Metallist soccer stadium, reconstruction of the airport and improvement of the infrastructure.

Karkiv citizens learn English
The training of personnel, in particular teaching them English, is one of Ukraine's priorities as it prepares to jointly host Euro 2012, the country's deputy premier said on Tuesday. "We need to teach 120,000 people to speak English. We must start teaching them now so they will not forget the language by July 1, 2012," Borys Kolesnikov, the deputy prime minister in charge of preparations for Euro 2012, said. He added that the Ukrainian Ministry of Education has already begun work on the issue. Kolesnikov said Ukraine's preparations for the tournament are proceeding and that he was confident all the necessary facilities would be built in time for the event. Ukraine's readiness to hold the 2012 tournament, which it is to share with Poland, has been a constant source of concern for UEFA. UEFA President Michel Platini previously warned that Ukraine could lose its right to host the championship due to the slow pace of stadium construction in the capital, Kiev, where the Euro 2012 final, among other matches, is due to take place. Kiev is one of the four Ukrainian cities due to host games at Euro 2012. Kharkov, Lvov and Donetsk are the other three. The other half of the matches will take place in the Polish capital, Warsaw, and in the cities of Poznan, Wroclaw, and Gdansk. Besides the more rapid construction of sports facilities, UEFA has required Ukraine to improve its roads, ensure sufficient accommodation for tournament guests and the proper operation of airports.

Small Southern Children's Railroad
So we continue our travelling...The next our stop is Small Southern Children's Railroad.
The Small Southern is 3.6 kilometers long and connects the Gorky Park with the Forest Park.
There were about 40 children's railroads in the former USSR. Few of them are still operational.
Carriages of the children's railroad are relatively spacious and there is enough space inside both for children and adults. The Small Southern is one of the oldest; it celebrated it's 60th anniversary in November 2000. The railroad was built on initiative of Komsomol (Young Communist League) members of the Southern Railroad and the Institute of Railroad Engineers in the years before the Second World War.
From May through November, young railroad enthusiasts and students of Kharkiv schools come here to acquire knowledge and practical skills in this industry. They drive locomotives, work as train attendants, switchmen, and yard masters.
The Small Southern rolling stock consists of Diesel locomotives, about fifteen passenger carriages, and two steam locomotives in honorary "retirement". However, with the trend for retro-style vehicles, they might return one day to entertain the public who have only seen steam engines in old picture books.
The children's railroad is very popular with the Kharkivites and guests and has about 20,000 to 30,000 visitors annually.
In its northern section the Gorky Park borders on the Forest Park, which is a large natural forest tract covering an area of over 2,000 hectares. This is the largest wooded area within the city limits, spread picturesquely on the terrain cut with ravines, which renders it special beauty and makes an excellent location for picnicking and recreation. An absolutely genuine railroad bridge connecting the Gorky Park with the Forest Park gives special charm to the children's railroad.

Shevchenko Garden (the second part of our trip)
So, we continue our walking....
Not far from the Concert Hall there is the main entrance to the Zoo. The Kharkiv Zoo was founded in 1895 and has already celebrated its centenary. It now has about five thousand animals representing 340 species of mammals, reptiles, amphibia, birds, and fishes from all continents. Of a great interest is the aquarium with exotic fishes of 80 species. The Zoo occupies the area of 22 hectares. As it is located in the wonderful gardens in city center, it is always populous with about 1 million visitors annually.
On the grounds of the T.Shevchenko Gardens there is an astronomical observatory of the Kharkiv National University founded in 1808. Scientists study solar processes, observe planets of the Solar system and satellites. Study of the moon occupies an important place in the research program. For many years, the observatory was headed by prominent scholar Academician N.P.Barabashov. In recent years, his name is more often associated with the Metro station named after this prominent scientist and Ukraine's largest Barabashov Market. So, the T.Shevchenko Gardens provide an opportunity to recall who really was Academician Barabashov.

Shevchenko Garden
So, let's imagine - you are in Kharkov, the birds are singing, the sun is shining... In such a weather it's better to go for a walk and not to seat at home...So you should go to the Shevchenko Garden... The Shevchenko Garden is the oldest green area in the city center. It was planted as far back as 1804. The gardens central path is a beautiful chestnut-tree alley leading from the Taras Shevchenko Monument to the University building. The gardens area of 25 hectares has over 15,000 trees and bushes of more than 100 varieties. It also has gigantic oaks, which are over 200 years old. One of these grows close to the monument to the great Kobzar (Bard). The gardens are being expanded and improved every year. After the war, their western slope was reconstructed with a water cascade and stairs leading down to the Klochkovska Street. A color and music fountain is located in the center of the gardens.
At the far end of the Shevchenko Gardens, there is a Movie and Concert Hall Ukrayina for 1,850 seats, known for its excellent acoustics. The originally shaped building merges well with the gardens green environment. It was designed by architects V.Vasilyev, Yu.Plaksiyev, V.Reusov, and L.Fridhan, and engineer A. Biletsky. The Movie and Concert Hall Ukrayina was inaugurated in August 1963.

The traditions of Ukrainian Easter.
Easter is called Velykden in Ukeaine. It has been celebrated over a long period of history and has had many rich folk traditions.
Easter (in Ukrainian: 'Velykden' or 'Paskha') is preceded by seven weeks of Lent and celebrated on each first week after vernal equinox and full moon. It is the most busy and cheerful holiday for orthodox believers. Saturday evening they gather in the church for the Easter vigil till the very morning when priests bless the food believers brought. After that people go home to celebrate Easter with their families. If they meet other people on the way they say: "Christ is risen!" and these people should reply "Risen indeed".
Ukrainian Easter is a historical combination of heathen and Christian traditions. Easter cake ('Kulich') and painted eggs ('Krashanki') are the symbols of Ukrainian Easter and obligatory food on the table this day. Kulich is baked from yeast dough in the form of cylinder. Krashanka is a boiled and painted egg. If you visit Ukraine on Easter holidays and have a Sunday meal in Ukrainian family, kids will surely involve you in their favorite Easter game: knocking the eggs - if you knock somebody’s egg and you egg is not broken - you are the winner!

The sisters came from a set down to win 2-6 6-1 6-4 against 12th seeds Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Israeli Shahar Peer in a match lasting nearly two hours and uncharacteristically dominated by baseline rallies.

It was the first time the Bondarenko sisters had won a doubles title in their 38th tournament playing together.
Their previous best was reaching three semi-finals in WTA Tour events. They had the chance to serve for the match at 5-2 but were broken before sealing victory on their first match point at 5-4 when Azarenka hit a backhand return into the net.
They said they would continue to play both singles and doubles -- Alona was seeded 21st in the singles at Melbourne Park -- but would prefer not to meet each other in tournaments.
"Yeah, for me it's not easy because she plays more winners (and has a) good serve, good shots," Alona said of her younger sister. "For me it's very tough because she knows me and can easier win with me."

The tour-guide Iryna Vorontsova shrugs her shoulders at being asked to tell about the sights of the path: meaning – it is impossible to tell about them in short. Minimum this is half an hour lecture.
Iryna Vorontsova, tour-guide, “Everything is set reasonably in nature: there is nothing spare. Look, there’s a stick: it fell off and moss appeared on it. It also has its function. There is a crib. As if animals realized that here is a wild-life reserve. They realized that nobody shoots here. If there is a single wolf in a wood, there must be hare. If there are no wolves who takes the weak ones, there will be no hare”.
You can’t litter, tear flowers, turn on tape-recorder and radio set. Although the eco-route is not a sanctuary area, still it is preserved. It has a long history.

Kharkiv is claiming to be the host of the Ski Race World Cup in 2009
Kharkiv is preparing to the Ski Race World Cup. The competitions of such level have been held in Ukraine for the second time only. Snowlayer - is not a profession, this is the name of the machine which evens snow and makes ski-tracks. It takes about 20 minutes to prepare a kilometer long piste. Volodymyr Polishuk, manager of Temp ski base stadium, “For this, here, we use border which pounds snow, make it more puffy, and here we have rubber which smoothes it, removes buckles. Well then we cut ski-tracks”. When there is no natural snow, “cannons” make artificial one: dissipate water, it freezes, and thus a snow coating comes out – so that it is impossible to tell it from the real one. A kilometer of the piste – is 4-5 days of work, mainly, in nighttime, when it is colder. In January, skiers assure, Karkiv Temp was the only snow place in Ukraine. Last year, to prove the experts from Switzerland, that it is possible hold competitions of international level, says the head of the ski base Yuriy Shcheholkov, they spent 7 thousand francs only to the license. Kharkiv Temp ski base has the status of ‘the national Olympic’ one. Which suggests state financing. European cup is to held here in March, Temp is preparing to receive 140 sportsmen. Yuriy Shcheholkov, head of Temp ski base, “Beside that, this is a great prestige for us, for the city, plus this is money. If we hold it… If we hold European cup next and year and receive a positive evaluation, we will be trusted to hold World Cup”. Kharkiv is not receiving a penny for European cup holding, but expenses. However, Yuriy Shcheholkov says that World Cup 2009 to which Kharkiv claims to be the host, will bring the city minimum $ 600 thousand.

Somebody had problems with digestion, the rest had something else…” Contest schedule wasn’t simply tight, Alyona’s mother says – Iryna Zhihan. To prepare for the new stage – make-up, hairdo, dressing – girls had maximum an hour. Iryna Zhihan, mother of the “Miss Bikini Universe – 2006” winner: “I managed to get to sleep 4-5 hours a day. When Alyona slept, I curled her hair. She slept, I massaged her, washed her clothes, ironed.” Alyona Zhihan doesn’t know yet, what “Miss Bikini Universe – 2006” is going to take up. She says, that it’s the concern of her agency. But Alyona knows for sure that next year she will judge the contestants and will pass her diadem to the winner.
