The history of Poltava leaves in a deep antiquity. 1174 is considered to be the year of the foundation of Poltava when the settlement "Ltava" or "Oltava" is mentioned in the written sources. They say that the city received its name from the inflow of Vorskla - the river Ltava or Oltava, where the settlement was situated. In the beginning of 15th century a settlement appears with the modern name - Poltava. In 1641 Poltava was named as a city.
Poltava is fortunate to have a fascinating history, crowned by the famous Battle of Poltava as well as cultural heritage that is rich and diverse. This town was admired by millions of visitors who have been here once and wanted to come back many more times.
The cultural life of the city was always very rich. Glorified by many cultural people, Poltava has given to the world a lot of talented and famous people. Hundreds of world famous artists who were born and have lived here secured this place at the very forefront of Ukrainian history. Ivan Kotlyarevsky, Nikolay Gogol, Panas Mirny, Volodymir Korolenko to name a few: those classical writers' literature captured Ukraine's quest to understand and define itself. Poltava also is very privileged to be recognized as home for many significant painters such as Nikolay Lysenko, Nikolay Yaroshenko, Michail Schepkin, Vera Holodnaya, Fedor Garin, Alexander Kovinka and many others. Sons of Poltava were among the first who were paving the way into open space - names of Alexander Zasiadko and Yuri Kondratyuk are known to almost anyone. It's impossible not to mention Nikolay Sklifosofsky and Vladimir Vernadsky who have worked and lived in Poltava.

The city is situated on the right bank of Vorskla River, the inflow of Dnepr River. The climate is temperate continental. The winter is rather soft with the weak frosts and frequent thaws. The average temperature in January, according to the long-term supervisions is 6,8 C. The summer is warm and dry. July is the hottest month with the average temperature about 20,9 C. The winds of the east and south-eastward are predominant. The rainfall is about 484 mm a year, which allots in the quite a regular intervals on the months. The large forestland of deciduous and pine woods approach to the city from the different sides, forming almost closed ring.

(19th centaury), there are a lot of churches, Spaskaya Church (1705-1706), The cathedral (1699-1709), Uspensky Cathedral, a number of buildings recognized as the monuments of architecture (Technical University and others), the modern buildings with the rich architecture. (The Gallery of Art, the branch of the Juridical Academy etc).
